Wii Wii Wii all the way home

In years past, I would often use video games as a bit of a stress reliever. But currently I do not have a working game computer. Since I've had a lot of stress lately, I've been contemplating getting a gaming system/console. But, of course, the last thing I wanted was another distraction to keep me from my studies. But recently I had an opportunity to get a Wii at a really good deal. So I jumped on the Wii bandwagon yesterday. While it may turn out to be a distraction, I figure it will at least be productive, in that I can limit my gaming to those which get me up & moving & burning calories. That aspect will also help limit my time on the thing, since I'll get tired. And the physical exertion should help alleviate the stress more effectively. So far, the boxing seems to be doing a good job at that (not surprisingly).

I've been eating way too much Burger King lately. It's terrible. But I figured out that two kid's meals costs virtually the same as one adult value meal, you get just as much (if not more) food, and it includes Star Trek toys. So yeah, now I'm up to 5 toys (plus 2 glasses). I even got a McCoy! He's a doctor, not a physicist. Yes, I am a major dork.

In other food related news, I bought a new oven today. My old one quit a couple months ago. With my schedule, it hasn't really been a major hinderance not having an oven--when I do cook at home, it can usually be done with the microwave or stove top. But I missed being able to bake. So I bought a new one. There's a cake in there now. I'm very excited. Which, I think, is further evidence of my dorkdome.

Where no one has gone before

So, I finally got around to seeing Star Trek today. I will say that I was definitely satisfied with the flick. Obviously, Zachary Quinty was perfectly cast as Spock. Most of the other casting was also well done, though contrary to what seems to be popular opinion, Karl Urban's performance as McCoy/Bones was rather disappointing, in my opinion. I felt he was trying a bit too hard to mimic DeForest Kelley's portrayal of the character, which came across as "forced." But just my opinion. The movie would have likely been much more entertaining for me personally had it not been for one particular scene (those who have seen the movie and who are aware of certain recent events in my life will likely know to what I am referring). But, overall, a fun romp.

Word of advice, though . . . try to get seated after the previews have rolled. Believe you me, you'll be better off avoiding the agony of the G.I. Joe trailer.

I am geek, hear me roar

Yes, I am a geek. I am such a geek that I have begun collecting the Burger King Star Trek glasses and kid's meal toys without even having seen the movie yet. Of course, I think that also means I am not much of a geek, having not yet seen the movie. So apparently I am a confused geek.

Missing in action

My sincerest apologies for the absence. Lately I have not had much time for anything. Which actually sucks considering I've been off from school this week. But between prepping for finals, taking finals, attending a wedding, house sitting for my folks, a cousin's birthday party, and dealing with issues revolving around my sister's death that we are still dealing with, I have not had much opportunity for blogging. But I have a few minutes, so here's a quick update.

Finals went tolerably well. I'm fairly certain I passed them all, though likely not with flying colors. The instructors threw a few curve balls in there (meaning I slacked off a bit and neglected my studies in a few specific areas). But I'm done with first year! Hurray! Only three more to go lol. We got a whole week off, and we'll be starting back up next week. As expected, we already have reading assignments, and due to a hectic schedule I have already fallen behind. Not a good start.

With my sister's passing, my folks inherited her two dogs. Due to my schedule, and his increasing age, Duncan has also been living with them rather than getting left alone. The two girls (Sammi, my folks' dog, and Liza, one of my sister's) recently began fighting. Yes, fighting. To the point that blood has been drawn. This is so not good. They took the two girls to Tulare this week, thinking it might help them bond without the boys around. Liza broke out of the yard (literally broke--knocked the gate off the hinge), which of course put my mom into an absolute panic. Fortunately, she made it back home a few hours later--a neighbor having picked her up. But those few hours were frantic.

Speaking of my sister, more information has become available to us recently via the FAA investigation. Understandably (I hope), I do not wish to discuss it further at this time. And truth be told I may never do so here. I don't know. But things have been difficult for the family.

Last Friday I furthered my life's goal and went to see X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It was a bit of a last minute decision, and I was a little worried about a crowded theater on opening night. Surprisingly, the theater was less than half full. Anyway, the movie was about as expected--a fun romp, though hardly award winning (it is, after all, a comic book flick). There were some parts I didn't like, in part because they didn't fit (imo) with other parts of the movie franchise. Or because they didn't jive with my recollection of the comic books (though admittedly it's been some 20 years since I last followed the print X-Men/Wolverine). But it was still fun, and nice couple hours of relaxation and distraction at the end of finals week. I need to go see Star Trek but not sure when I'm going to find the time.

That's pretty much the relevant updates. Rather boring, I know. But that seems to be my life as of late. I had a Babe of the Month entry planned, but obviously missed it. I'll try to get one in soon, though it may not be until the next scheduled installment lol. Finally, I want to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers out there.
