Now, I'm all for investigating the accusations of profiteering & price fixing. And I'm all for prosecuting the crap out of anyone found to be doing it. But these San Diego folks are joking when they call for Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency
over the gas prices, right? Look, I realize that gas prices affect the overall economy, but let's be realistic here. Lousianna, Mississippi . . . those
are states of emergency! High gas prices, and even gouging, are nothing more than a major annoyance. They are something which we consumers must grit our teeth and bear while an investigation and prosecution are conducted, then deal with reparations later. They are not
justifications for declaring a state of emergency. Especially
when looking at the devestation currently going on in other parts of the country.
What is the reason for declaring a state of emergency? Because it provides access to state and federal funds. That's it. That's the primary reason to do it. So in accusing the oil companies and gas stations of greed, these dipwit politicians are acting on their own greed trying to get additional funding (and potentially taking federal funds away from places that truly need it!
) by exaggerating the problem and declaring an emergency where one does not exist. San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre and Councilwoman Donna Frye should be ashamed of themselves for doing exactly what they're accusing other of doing . . . trying to take advantage of the disaster along the Gulf coast to their own benefit.
Sorry for the rant, but this issue (obviously) is really irritating. Now please excuse me . . . I have to e-mail Arnold and urge him not to listen to these putzes.
